Japanese Astrology

Japanese astrology is deeply influenced by Chinese astrology, Taoist cosmology, and Buddhism, evolving into a distinct system known as Onmyōdō (the “Way of Yin and Yang”). It combines the lunar calendar, zodiac animals, five elements, and directional deities to interpret fate and harmonize human life with cosmic forces. Traditionally, Japanese astrologers (onmyōji) advised emperors and nobles on matters of destiny, rituals, and auspicious dates. While modern Japan relies less on astrology for daily life, zodiac animals (eto) and fortune-telling remain popular during the New Year, reflecting a blend of ancient metaphysics and cultural tradition.
